Valentine's Day Mini Sessions and (Re)Growing a Business // Minocqua, WI

Somehow in my years of photography, I had never set up an opportunity for my clients to do mini sessions- an hour or two blocked out to do back to back 15 minute efficient portrait shoots for families or couples. I thought 15 minutes for people to drop by and enjoy their time together in front of the camera for a bit on Valentine’s Day was a great idea, so that’s what we did.

One hour, four beautiful families and some super cooperative weather!

I had a blast with this and enjoyed the fast paced afternoon with really smiley, happy people.

It’s certainly not easy to move four hours away from where your client base used to be and re-establish a referral based business all over again, but that’s what I’m doing. So, thanks to all the families for coming out, trusting me to photograph you and your loved ones, and for sharing my name with everyone you know!

In an effort to continue to grow business and a client base in the greater Minocqua area, I’m offering 10% off all standard sessions when you mention this blog post and book between now and the end of March!

Enjoy just a handful of my favorite photos from the day- click on them to view them in their original format (not square cropped).

I'm at it again- a life update and returning to an old love

If you haven’t been here to my website before, welcome! If it’s been a few years and you haven’t been able to access the site… well, that’s because this domain, my website, and my business were taking a bit of a hiatus. I wasn’t sure I’d ever be back, but here I am and I’m pretty excited about it.

To quote my newly updated “ About” section of the website,

“I spent about half a decade during and after college as a professional photographer, running Zach Jindra Photography, but in 2019 I decided to pursue a career in fine wine + spirits as a sommelier and a fine wine salesperson at a great company. It was quite an experience and I learned so much as a person from that time away from my business. But just as I’ve always returned to my home state after time away, I’ve returned to photography as well. I’m more than excited to once again build relationships and have fun with my clients and be creative behind the lens.”

My wife and I moved up to the greater Minocqua area, specifically the gorgeous Manitowish Waters, after quitting our jobs in the summer of 2023, selling our house without another place to live yet established, and hitting the road to backpack for a bit out in Colorado.

We took off from Milwaukee truly without an idea of if we’d stay in Colorado, come back to Wisconsin, or move somewhere else completely. After many miles on the trail, we decided that we wanted to make far northern Wisconsin our new home. We returned from Colorado, emptied out our suspect Milwaukee rental unit, and moved up to Manitowish Waters. Here we’re currently loving life, renting a small but adorable and cozy 500 square foot unit along the Manitowish River. We’re looking to buy some secluded and peaceful acreage this Spring, and live a simplistic and intentionally slow way of life- off grid, setting up a small yurt, drilling a hand pump well, using a basic solar setup, heating and cooking with a wood stove, and of course building a wood fired sauna (and maybe hot tub). This is the plan and we’re giddy just getting ready for it. Check back in half a year from now to see where we’re at.

Upon moving to the Northwoods and re-establishing ourselves, I decided to take a few months of semi-retirement to focus on health, wellness, enjoy being off the hamster wheel I was on, and casually think about “what’s next”. For a while, I intentionally didn’t even try to think about what’s next in terms of work. We had worked hard and saved as intelligently as we could the past 5 years to be able to have the opportunity to “chill” for a while. With my free time, I started reading a ton, I kayaked a lot, I learned a bit of fermentation science and now love fermenting foods- kefir, sourdough, veggies, fruit, yogurt, etc. I started taking out my camera casually-just having fun with it and getting creative. I’ve spent a lot of time at the gym getting stronger and recovering from injury, hot and cold bathing in the sauna. I started learning Japanese (Elaina promised me when I become fluent, we can spend year or two in Japan). I spend multiple hours per day cooking delicious, whole foods. We haven’t purchased a bread product in nearly three months. We don’t have a fast food joint within 35 miles of us, we rarely eat out, and we’re semi-sober these days, pulling way back from any consistent alcohol consumption. I feel so much better. My blood pressure has come down ten points to optimal levels again. We’re actually, finally working to live and not living to work. We’ve set new priorities.

Our new local friend Tom, who has lived many more life experiences than I, told me that our current way of life reminded him of a quote from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden:

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I come to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Thank you Thoreau, and thank you Tom. I love this perspective.

As I return focus to what’s important in life, and I pick up the camera once again, feeling rejuvenated and excited to get creative, I feel that independent photography absolutely fits the lifestyle that we’re after. From 2015 to 2020 photography treated me well. The relationships I built with clients was rewarding and fun, and unless everyone was lying to me, my clients loved the work I did for them and the style of portrait photography and photojournalism I utilized. Photography is fun, weddings are fun, smiling is fun, beautiful locations are fun. I’m excited to be a Northwoods photographer.

Reestablishing oneself in a service industry after a significant hiatus and in a brand new location likely won’t be easy. As I begin to build my business again, if you or someone you know is getting married and going to be looking for a photographer (or a family that needs updated portraits or a senior that needs high school photos), please send them my website and throw my name out there. I appreciate you all, and I’m grateful for what Zach Jindra Photography became over the years when I first started it, and I’m grateful for what it once again will be because of you all.

Here’s to a new chapter, or rather turning the pages back to a previous one.

Zach

Kayleigh + Branden // Sheboygan, WI

I knew I liked these two the minute I met them in downtown Chicago for their engagement session about a year ago. Kayleigh + Branden are some of the most laid back but also put-together people I've ever met. It's hard to come by too many people who are both professional and committed to their passions and careers, while also being super fun and down to earth.

A year ago for their engagement session we walked the beach of Chicago's Lake Michigan Shoreline, and this past June, Kayleigh and Branden walked the shoreline of Lake Michigan at the beautiful Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan, WI. It was a beautiful day all around and I couldn't be more happy for these two. Oh, also Branden joined the live band to rock the drums for a song during the reception and he absolutely killed it!

Melissa + Michael // Appleton, WI Wedding

Here's the thing. I haven't "been around," blogging weddings or sessions since the end of September... which is totally not cool of me. So, even though this wedding may be from a few months ago, and the standard time for posting "A Look Back on 2017" has passed, I'm going to break the rules and look back on Fall 2017 and this beautiful couple's wedding day.

Melissa + Michael-- you two were so awesome to be around. On a couple's wedding day, there's pretty much only one time when the two have the day (almost) entirely to themselves-- during the couple's portraits. After the knot had been tied at church, we left all family and friends except for the wedding party, to head over to a quiet park filled with trails that winded amongst gorgeous autumnal red, orange, and yellow trees. We finished up our quick wedding party photos, then, finally Melissa + Michael had the forest to themselves.

There are so many intimate moments  throughout a wedding day, but I don't know if there's a moment that allows for as much quiet, breathing time, and love as a couple's session mid-wedding day. I got to document a beautiful couple sharing crazy big smiles, holding each other tight to stay warm in the cool October afternoon, and running through the woods. It was a joy to be around these two in those moments. Michael + Melissa, thank you for letting me document your day!

Meg + Alex // Madison Engagement Session

Meg + Alex are newly Madisonians and I had the best of times exploring the Capital City with them during their e-sesh. On an absolutely perfect weekday evening, I drove over from Milwaukee to my favorite city in the world/their new home of Madison.  'Sploring in the UW Arboretum, taking a lap around the capitol building, walking Library Mall, dancing down the Lakeshore Path, and splitting a pitcher of Spotted Cow at the Terrace-- we did it all.

Working with these two fun and beautiful human beings made a weekday evening "at work" as enjoyable as it's ever going to get for me. Super pumped for your wedding next summer, you guys!

Sarah + Vince // Stevens Point

These may be the two sweetest humans on the planet. When I look back on Sarah + Vince's wedding day the day was most memorable to me because of their kind and caring hearts-- constantly checking in to see how we were doing and if we needed anything... on their wedding day! I love my clients.

A quick rain shower was in the forecast right before the ceremony, but once the skies emptied their tanks, the sky was as blue as could be and the remainder of the day was a total dream. These two are so obviously loved by so many people and it was an absolute joy to be a part of their day, capturing their love for each other and among their family + friends.

Congrats to Mr. + Mrs. Biegel and go, Pack, go!!

Candice + Jeremiah // Downtown Chicago Engagement Session

By far the rainiest session I've ever shot. With that being said, looking at the final gallery of this Downtown Chicago engagement session, it's so dang romantic!

Chicago skyscrappers, city lights, the coolest couple, and raindrops pouring off the edge of their umbrella. Candice + Jeremiah basically gave me a free tour of downtown, as we drove around the city to find the prettiest little places. And Jeremiah, props to you for nudging us to shoot a bit at the Clybourn Metra station-- the train stop that Jeremiah would get on and off when visiting Candice before he moved down to the big city. It doesn't get much cuter than that, friends. Gotta love these two, and their total embrace of this beautifully rainy Saturday.

Collin + Terra Are Married! // Green Bay, WI

I know these two are sick of hearing me say it, but these two are incredible-- they make my job way too easy + so incredibly fun. Any friends or family of Collin + Terra can attest to the goofiness that is Collin + his lighthearted, compassionate second half that is Terra. A pair of human beings that has so much joy + so many good things to give to the world.

I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with + celebrate these two. Congrats Terra + Collin-- if it has yet to sink in, let me remind you, you're married!!

Jacob + Ali // A Sunrise Engagement Session

I said it before and I'll say it again. It took me all of about 17 seconds with these two to realize that this session was going to be an absolute blast. I mean, it's pretty obvious after checking out the photos below what kind of personalities and love for each other that these two have-- all of which was made possible by a date set up by Jacob's mother. So yeah, it doesn't get much cuter than that.

So excited for Jacob + Ali to be married in July!!

Ali + Jake Are Married! // Northeastern Wisconsin

These two kids were so ready to commit their lives to each other; there was no question about it. Spending the day with Ali + Jake was such a joy for me-- I immensely enjoyed watching these two laid-back folks tie the knot on a frigid January day. Ali said it best: we froze our butts off at times during the day, but the love that was shared was so warm in the hearts of all who shared the joy of the day.

Can I just add, have you ever seen a sunset so golden as it was on this day? Not me. This was all too incredible. Congrats Ali + Jake-- you're married!!

Deborah + Levi Are Married! // Minocqua, WI

I shot Deborah + Levi's engagement session nearly a year ago in Madison, WI. I still remember as they were driving down for the session I was watching the rain falling heavily from the sky, without signs of stopping. We ended up doing the majority of our session in a few indoor locations, and these two rocked their session regardless of the cats and dogs falling outside.

Fast forward nearly a year, to December 28, and instead of liquid water covering the ground, it was gorgeous white snow. I couldn't have had more fun being a part of Deborah + Levi's Northwoods Wedding. These two are so laid back, fun-loving, and crazy tolerant of unbelievably cold temperatures.

So yeah, if you know anyone else getting married up north, in the woods, with their reception in a giant log cabin, let me know-- that's right up my alley.

Congrats on being married, you two!!

Ashley + Jon // Green Bay, WI

I had only seen Ashley a few times since 8th grade graduation nearly 10 years ago, but when she said she wanted me to photograph her wedding I was ecstatic. It's always so good to catch up with old friends + get to meet new ones-- like Ashley's fiancé, Jon.

Ashley + Jon just seem so incredibly content with life + overjoyed to have each other. They quickly put behind a long + eventful night of driving from Minnesota to Green Bay, WI and were so easygoing throughout their engagement session. It was a crisp fall evening, but beautiful nonetheless. Their July wedding can't come soon enough!!

Tanner's Senior Session // Green Bay, WI

Had a ton of fun getting to know this kid throughout the course of his session. He's a heck of a track athlete at Green Bay Preble High School-- I got to feel all nostalgic about my time competing at Preble back in the day as well, as we discussed times, races + competition like fellow track nerds.

The afternoon's session may not have included a bright shinning sun, but we worked with the moody, cloudy day + totally went with it! Turns out that Tanner can straight up model. Also did I mention that we got to play with a waterfall. Green Bay, WI... waterfalls? Yup. And it was great.

Collin + Terra // Green Bay, WI

Collin was "one of those" try-try-again types when it came to getting Terra to think of him as more than a friend. Long story short, he succeeded + as a result we have the cutest, goofiest + most perfect couple on the face of this planet.

The engagement session began at 7:30am, bright and early, and just in time for a gorgeous light on the distant horizon. Don't ask me how these two were so awake so early in the morning... I didn't question it! I had never previously experienced what I did with these two: the first ten minutes of the session I literally didn't have to tell them a thing in regards to posing, where to stand, etc. They kept being adorable completely on their own, and I just captured the moments. It was all so easy for me.

If I were to tell you that I was immeasurably excited for this wedding to happen... I'd be telling the truth!! Luckily I only have to wait a couple months. So happy to see what's in store for these two.

Mary + Andrew // Madison, WI

All he had to do was whisper in her ear (or make some strange sound-- whichever you find more romantic) and she'd have the most genuine smile. There was nothing that I was going to do or say to make Mary + Andrew smile any wider--  and I didn't have to because they had no problem making each other grin from ear to ear.

So ready for their wedding this March!

Sam + Natalie // Milwaukee, WI

Sam + Natalie's Engagement Session kicked off one of three sessions I photographed this past weekend-- and they made it the relaxing kind of start to the weekend that I had hoped for.

We didn't have to travel much farther than a few blocks from their new Milwaukee condo to find a couple great locations that we liked. How simple is that?? The afternoon sky was a bit dreary, but their emotion was quite the opposite. My fiancé, Elaina (Natalie's sister) helped out as assistant photographer for the session, so the session was essentially just the four of us hanging out in Downtown Milwaukee, enjoying ourselves as we strolled along.

The entire session was so simple and easy, yet it felt so Sam + Natalie-- no frills; just a good time about the town. I think I need to mention that the evening with these two concluded with a crazy good dinner at a new favorite Milwaukee restaurant.

Kaylee + Matt // Rochester, MN

Photography is just as much the  relationship between photographer + client as it is the art of capturing beautiful moments. Everyone searches for a photographer that makes beautiful images-- that's a given-- but I know I ALSO need to (and love to!) pour every ounce of my positivity, energy + personality into each of my sessions or weddings.

Becoming BFFs with my clients is what I love to do and it's what makes this business so incredibly enjoyable.

Spending the evening with Kaylee + Matt was yet another reminder of why I love being in this industry they call photography. These two were such a joy to be around, and I can't wait for their wedding day as well! Kaylee + Matt are graduating together this coming spring and I'mso excited to see their lives take off together. Kaylee's going to be the greatest teacher and Matt's going to be the coolest pastor out there. What a duo. Super stoked that I'll be behind the camera for the Big Day as well!

The Sweeney-Demezas Family // Madison, WI // 9-4-16

Jered and his sister, Eryn realized their family photo needed an update, so they gave their parents a family portrait session for Christmas-- what a thoughtful gift!

Mom + Dad redeemed their family session this past weekend on a beautiful evening in the downtown Madison area. They were such a fun family to be around. Plus, I've got to mention the furry family member that stole the show: Hossa! Their pup was such a well-behaved and handsome model, I think I might just request that he have his own personal portrait session.

Aside from a few pesky bugs on the boardwalk in Vilas Park, the session was on-point and absolutely perfect. You now have a few new family portraits for the living room,  Sweeney-Demezas Family!

Audra + Brian // Rawley Point Lighthouse Wedding // 8-13-16

Lake Michigan, miles of sandy beach and grassy dunes, a historic lighthouse, and a gorgeous mid-August day. It sounds absolutely perfect, and it one-hundred percent was. Audra + Brian's wedding at the Rawley Point Lighthouse was as dreamy as could be, and the love flowing throughout the venue could not be denied.

Audra and Brian are the maybe the most easy-going and relaxed couple I've ever gotten to know, and to see all the pieces of the puzzle come together for them on their special day put a huge smile on my face. Congrats, Mr. + Mrs. Erickson!
